The Challenge

The transformation and sizing of a topology optimization outcome into parametric designs is usually highly time-consuming.

  • Interpretation of topology optimization results for conventional manufacturing is carried out manually by redrawing in CAD
  • Manual iterations are required to perform the sizing of the optimization shape
  • The results from topology optimization are often only manufacturable in additive processes

Automatic identification of load paths with the help of a voxelized skeleton algorithm and automatic subsequent dimensioning and further processing.

VOXEL SPACE

Create a voxel space of the given mesh from the topology optimization result

SKELETONIZATION

Reduce the voxel space to its skeleton by reducing the thickness to single voxel throughout the load path

CURVE NETWORK

Extract the curves from the skeletonization which can be processed to obtain a clean curve network connected to the non-design spaces

SOLID BEAM NETWORK

Use the clean curve network to construct pipe curves and transform the pipe curves into a pipe network mesh. This mesh can be converted into a smooth solid body
